The following methods can be used if you lose your WhatsApp chats and wish to retrieve the chat history. It is advised to ensure that your chats are backed up before restoring them on a new Android device in case you wish to restore your conversation. You may take a backup of a chat by opening WhatsApp, going to more settings, selecting chat, and then selecting chat backup.

You may also select the Google Account to which you would like to backup your chats. Additionally, you may create a local backup of your chat data on your device. Google Drive offers the option to automatically backup your WhatsApp chat history, which can be set to occur daily, weekly, or monthly. Using the same phone number and Google Account used to create the backup is essential to successfully restoring a Google Drive backup.

Listed below are the steps to restore a Google Drive backup.

Make certain your new Android device is linked to the Google Account in which your backup is stored. Once you have installed WhatsApp, you may verify your number. When you are prompted to restore your chats and media from Google Drive, select RESTORE. Once the process of restoring your chat history has been completed, select NEXT. A list of your chats will appear once the initialization process has been completed.

In addition to restoring your chats, WhatsApp will continue to restore your media files. You will be automatically restored from your local backup file if you install WhatsApp without making any previous backups from Google Drive.

Creating a local backup of WhatsApp:

Using a local backup will require you to transfer the files to the phone using a computer, file manager, or SD card.

Instructions for restoring your backup are as follows:

You will need an application for managing files. You can access your WhatsApp databases through the file manager application by navigating to your local storage or SD card. Depending on whether your data is stored on an SD card or internal storage, you may see "internal storage" or "main storage". Make a copy of the most recent backup file to the Database folder of the local storage device. Launch WhatsApp and verify your telephone number. Restore your chats and media from the local backup by tapping RESTORE when prompted.

Additionally, users should be aware that their phone will store up to seven days' worth of local backups. Your phone will create a local backup every day at 2:00 AM and store the file in your phone. You may see "internal storage" or "main storage" folders if your data is not found in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/ folder.

Using a local backup of WhatsApp when the data is less recent

In order to restore a local backup that is not the most recent, you must follow the steps outlined below:

Download a file manager app. Locate your local storage or SD card > WhatsApp > Databases in the file manager app.   There may be instances where your data has not been stored on the SD card, in which case you will see "internal storage" or "main storage". It is necessary to rename the backup file you wish to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. A previous backup may have been performed using an older protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. The crypt extension should not be altered. Upon being prompted, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, and then tap RESTORE.
